New Testament Outline: Matthew 13-16

Matthew 13 — Jesus tells a series of parables, he also gives an explanation for why he tells parables, explaining the meaning of the parable of the sower, and explaining the meaning of the parable of the weeds. The parables Jesus tells include: the parable of the sower, the parable of the weeds, the parable of the mustard seed and the leaven, the parable of the hidden treasure, the parable of the pearl of great price, and the parable of the net. After Jesus finished speaking in parables the crowds that had been listening to him took offense at Jesus, so Jesus left without doing many mighty works.

Matthew 14 — John the Baptist is beheaded in prison after Herod threw a party and promised to have his head on a platter. Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The disciples get into a boat ahead of Jesus and he meets them walking on the water. In Gennesaret Jesus heals all who were sick.

Matthew 15 — Jesus speaks with some scribes and Pharisees about traditions and commandments. He then calls some people to him and explains how it’s less important what goes into a persons body than it is what comes out of a person’s body. Jesus leaves the area and goes to Tyre and Sidon where a Canaanite woman stops Jesus to ask him to heal her daughter who has a demon. Jesus heals her daughter without even going to her. Jesus continues on and heals many people who come to him. Jesus feeds the four thousand with seven loaves and a few small fish.

Matthew 16 — The Pharisees and Sadducees come to Jesus to test him and demand that he show them signs. Jesus addresses the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus speaks with Peter and Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus tells his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and be killed. He then tells his disciples that if anyone wants to be a part of what he’s doing they need to pick up their cross and follow him.
