Infant in Christ

An infant in Christ is someone new to the faith. It is not based on a person’s age. It has to do with where they are at in their relationship to Christ. If someone is just starting out there is no expectation that they have everything figured out. It is a relationship we grow in to. We progress as we learn new things and apply those learnings to our life.

Paul told the believers in Ephesus that when we reach maturity, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” Eph 4.14

To the church in Corinth he said, “Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.” 1 Cor 3.1

And Hebrews 5.13 says, “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.”

Infants in Christ are similar to infants in life. They need things because they have not gotten to the point of being able to discern or protect themselves or live in a right manner. It is not a negative thing to be an infant. It can be healthy to embrace the idea that people new to this relationship with Christ have special needs that they will not have as they grow.

In particular infants need someone or several people to protect protect, guide and model for them what life in Christ means.

If you are new to this relationship with Jesus, consider asking the pastor or someone at the church for a few minutes to explain your desire to have someone help you in this relationship with Jesus.
